Like clockwork, there are a few things we can all set our watches to this time of year: Halloween fades rapidly into the holiday “season” (trees are up and carols are playing in the mall before the trick-or-treat candy is finished), and Gartner is on hand to tell us what to look forward to in 2012.

At this year’s Symposium/ITxpo, Gartner analysts named cloud computing as one of the top 10 strategic technologies for 2012.  This marks the fourth straight year that cloud computing has been named to Gartner’s list, describing cloud computing as “a disruptive force,” with “the potential for broad, long-term impact in most industries.”

One of the most satisfying recognitions made, in our humble opinion, is that enterprises are finally beginning to move past understanding the cloud to making decisions on its implementation.

The hybrid cloud is a cloud computing implementation model that provides for porting applications, virtual machines and workloads between private and public clouds as deemed necessary.  Since hybrid cloud “brings together external public cloud services and internal private cloud services, as well as the capabilities to secure, manage and govern the entire cloud spectrum,” Gartner says it will be a “major focus for 2012.”

Hybrid cloud making is already making up approximately 20 percent of all current enterprise cloud deployments, according to a recent Market Pulse survey.

Data disaster recovery plans (DRPs) have always been controversial, at least when it comes down to the cost; upfront capital and resources must go into the system, and it’s never easy to convince a skeptical or hesitant manager to invest in a plan that may or may not ever have a return on investment, particularly when management factors more traditional solutions like insurance, or conventional data backup and storage methods.

The best thing to do is arm yourself with the facts about why  DRP in the cloud makes everyone’s  life easier in the long run. Let’s face it, sooner or later you’re going to need to place your disaster recovery in the cloud. There’s no reason to wait until you’ve experienced disaster, cloud DRPs don’t have to be so intimidating.

First things first: placing a site-replica in the cloud guarantees you will always have a backup and recovery system, and nothing less should be in place when it comes to protecting your critical information and assets, and having them available immediately when you need them. A good thing to factor into your decision is that with a cloud DRP, you only pay when you need your off-site resources. The best part is that your resources will always be available to you, whenever and wherever you need them.

Most cloud infrastructures utilize the “pay-per-use” cost model, which helps most small to medium businesses get their DRP up running in a scalable and controlled way, with very little capital expenditure.

Storing your hosted assets at a separate, offsite data-center translates to fewer worries on administrative issues, such as finding a suitable location to store backups, paying ground rent, the cost in human resources, purchasing assets, and a myriad of other details that help form a traditional or conventional non-cloud DRP.

Your Cloud DRP services are not where you can see them and audit them, which may seem unnerving since you can’t always know at a glance that the service being provided is problem-free.

It’s good practice to take a close examination of your cloud service provider, including the infrastructure security, resilience, and recovery.  The cloud provider’s accreditation and business practices are good sign of how much a company has invested in its infrastructure and design security. Test a potential cloud provider on a ‘try-before-you-buy’ program, which allows you to get a feel for what they have to offer.  This will give you something tangible to take to management when you present the demo to them yourself.

Disaster recovery within the cloud offers benefits for businesses and organizations of all sizes. Despite the potential challenges that may be making you wary, like any other important decision, due diligence and careful planning are all you need to arm your company with seriously valuable resilience and recovery benefits.

Once a business or organization has made the decision to move its key business processes and IT infrastructure to the cloud, they often do so with concerns about the potential risks involved.

When it comes to securing your company’s data, how do you know if the method you’ve chosen for the task is always going to be reliable? Discovering flaws in your data backup system after disaster strikes is akin to locking the barn door after the horse has bolted. Every day, technology to secure data improves, and today’s growing cloud technologies are providing more and more businesses with the sound data protection and recovery capabilities that render older, vulnerable backup and storage systems risky to any organization that can’t afford to find their disaster recovery plan wasn’t foolproof.

For MSPs and IT managers, keeping up with technology best suited to protect your company’s data is a never-ending task. For those who rely on tape drives, there are better solutions available, and here’s why: Tapes have an average failure rate of 99-percent. That means all tape drives will fail at least once in their lifetime, often without any type of warning or signs of failure.

Until recently, tape backup was the only affordable option for backing up large volumes of data. Stewart is responsible for BluPointe’s internal and external technology needs, and working with the company’s global cloud data storage and backup technology advancements and solutions.

Before joining the BluPointe team, Stewart moved from his native Chatsworth, Ontario to London, Ontario where he founded II Designs DSL Internet, specializing in business web development and virtual private server hosting with various open source projects including Drupal, WordPress, Sugar CRM and OSCommerce.

Prior to building II Designs, Stewart worked as an engineer for Snap On Tools, Canada calibrating and installing Ontario’s Drive Clean program’s emissions equipment, and for Mirtech Security, where, as a Pelco Certified Systems Technician (PCST) he was responsible for IT infrastructure and video security in various correctional institutions.  Stewart also worked on the installation of a hybrid fiber wide area network closed circuit television security system for the City of London.
